In short - try not to think about it too much. Which goes back to my main thought: the game just uses the religion as a jumping off point.

It's normal for people to take things from their everyday life and turn them into flights of fancy and the fantastic just as a mental exercise and for a personal creative outlet.
BINDING OF ISAAC ANTETYPE JESUS PLUS
Plus the stories and characters and mythology of it all is something that the creator was already familiar with. Think of the game using Christianity as a stylistic choice instead of using the game as a platform to make commentary about Christianity. There are plenty of other media creations that do the same thing. It uses preexisting imagery and stories as a basis to build upon.ĭoing so takes some of the work out of development and give people something that's easier to connect with since it's already somewhat familiar. I don't see it as trying to make a statement about the faith one way or another. The game uses the religion as a jumping off point. It's an interesting storyline, can be interpreted in many, many different ways. Isaac has to deal with his inner demons, and is forced to wonder, is he really the evil one? Is his mother and his peers right? He's ostracized as we can see in the memories between levels, and his mother is abusive, finally culminating in her attempt to kill Isaac. Isaac while being a child, doesn't really get to enjoy his childhood. Rather, it does show that religious extremism, coupled especially with mental illness (Isaac's mom is clearly schizophrenic) and stresses at home (Isaac's dad leaving, for what reason exactly we're not told), can combine to create a really nasty environment for a child. I think that BoI definitely has religion, and christianity in particular, in a negative tone, but I don't believe it's trying to say "religion is altogether bad". Binding of Isaac's storyline uses religion as a catalyst for the antagonist, true.īut is religion the real enemy here? Or is it Isaac himself, and his own personal demons?
